Ground Conditions on Lugnaquilla.

W/c 30/03/2026 Conditions underfoot are reasonably good for this time of year. At present all access routes to the summit are wet but passable. . However Pay attention as you approach the plateau from the Fraughan Glen side at Red Scar (035 934)as there are some dangerous boggy patches in this area. Water levels in both the Fraughan Rock Brook and the Avonbeg river are still high following the exceptionally wet February. If returning to Baravore carpark by Arts Lough be prepared for ground that is extremely wet and boggy. This route is not recommended at the moment as this means you will be crossing the river which is now dangerously high. Even in drier conditions always take extreme caution when crossing any river no matter how small or low the water level.

If approaching from Camenabullogue conditions underfoot are now much wetter also.

Weather Update

The outlook for this coming weekend is not good with impending arrival of Storm Dave. Temperatures will be normal at about 6-10 degrees. There are yellow warnings for Saturday and Sunday will bring showers and winds to the east. Weather will continue to be unsettled for the early part of the week . Unfortunatley for the present low pressure is now firmly in charge with resulting weather conditions.

Hiking the hills this weekend may be challenging so if you venture out remember to wear appropriate clothing and footwear , bring food , drinks , map and compass. Even in cooler winter conditions hydration is vital so please allow at least two litres of water for a day hike. Do not forget your first Aid kit ! Remember any river crossing is dangerous but do not attempt to do so this week.

Change in Our Lugnaquilla route.

Due to the actions of a dog walker , the “zig zag” route up Lug has been closed by the Landowner.

Our descent from Lug when hiking from the Glenmalure side will now avoid this route and will take the path by Arts Lough and back down crossing the river to Baravore . We hope this situation will be resolved in the future. As the return route via Art’s Lough involves a river crossing, if water levels are high ,your guide may choose to return via an alternative route. At all times your Safety is our priority.
